On a recent trip to Lake Tahoe, for a little "R&R", i managed to sip a glass or two of Oregon wine while there. Strange how the restaurant's there only serve wines from California and Europe, and a couple from WA state ? Guess distributors are missing the boat ? Funny ! "Missing the boat....in Lake Tahoe" ?
Anyway, this is my video tasting of this delightful white Austrian wine. It is very very tasty ! The 2009 is already sold out, but 2010 is coming to www.awinetodiefor.com soon.

My visit to Marks Ridge Winery in Sweet Home, Oregon introduced me to another smaller "Botique" winery, where the owners had "hands on" with all aspects of grape production. They grow their grapes for the sole purpose of making the best tasting wines they can.It's not all about the amount they can produce and sell, but how much of quality they can produce, knowing that the quality will sell. There is a difference.This is exactly why I started A Wine To Die For. To bring these wines to the world ! In my opinion, it's not about "points", "Pinkies extended", or spitting, it's about quality wines you find, that you will love to drink, and pour for those you love.

Traveling hite Tablecloth, "Sip" Wine & Food Classic, McMinnville, Oregon

Spent last weekend in McMinnville, Oregon, attending the "Sip", Wine and Food Classic. It was held at the Evergreen Air and Space Museum. Check out this video, of attendies walking around sipping wine, under a Stealth Bomber !
There were really great wines this year, and "Best of Show" went to Bradley Vineyards, here in the Umpqua Valley ! Nice,

Attended this years event, this is my 12th year in a row. Wouldn't miss it. The Greatst of the Grape is in my opinion, the "classiest" wine event in Southern Oregon. Held in a beautiful conference center at 7 Feathers Casino, a lot of time, money and hard work, produce a special evening. Beautiful dressed up ladies, fine wines, excellent food pairings with area restaurants, just one fine night out.

A Wine to Die For visits "Hip Chicks Do Wine" in Oregon

The name "Hip Chicks Do Wine" may bring thougfhts and a picture to your mind of just a fun bunch of ladies, making wine for fun. I finally had the chance last week of visiting with them in their "warehouse home base" in Portland Oregon.
You find yourself in the "Warehouse Distric" of town, quite the difference from rolling hills of other areas in Oregon.When you enter the door, you enter a old warehouse, but then you see the wine barrels, hear the "clinking" of wine glasses,
and can detect the aroma of whats to follow. Turning a corner, you see the wine bar with it's glitter and decorations, notice the decorated bottles, and on this day, I came upon the smile of "Mollie" behind the bar. Mollie was very pleasant, and knowledgable of the business and the wines. After explaining to her my intent, of sampling wines, and determining if I wanted to ask the owners to "partner" with me, she took me on a great journey of "Hip Chick" wines.
After tasting both reds and whites, I realized that these ladies had something for everyone in their briefcase ! From a really crisp, fruit froward Pinot Gris, a 05' Reserve Syrah, to a blend they call their "Belly Button Wine".
My personal "Favs" ? The 08' Pinot Gris, 07' Syrah and their 07' Tiernan Conners Merlot.
All in all, a very plesant experience. You can find them at most wine weekends here in Oregon, like the Newport Wine and Seafood Festival, and the same in Astoria. They also put on many smaller tasting adventures and benefit nights, so keep an eye out for them
They also have a tasting room in Newberg so check it out.

I met with Laurie and Renee, the founders of Hip Chicks Do Wine. Immediately I saw the passion for the wine and the business. These two have expanded their wines to the grapes of the Columbia Valley in Washington, producing some "Fine Dining Wines".

And, let me just say, that if you have the chance to visit with them, you have just got yto try some of their wines from their "Pulp Novel" and "Wine Bunny" series !

The Traveling White Tablecloth visits Marks Ridge Winery in Sweethome, Oregon

One of the most enjoyable parts of my adventure in wine, is visiting the small, "botique" wineries. You know, the small, family run, 10-20 acre's of grapes.
Like a long time ago in California, when "flower children" decided to grow grape vines instead of(or with) pot ? These small wineies put their heart and soul into their grapes, and the production of their nectar in a bottle. They can tell you everything about that bottle of wine. And when they describe it, it's like they are describing one of their children.
Marks Ridge Winery in Sweethome, Oregon is one such place. It takes a bit to get there. They are really, the only vineyard in town. Being about a holf an hour off the I-5, not much "drive by" traffic.
But, Jay and his wife Janet, have put their lives into producing what I feel is some really quality wines on their small 10 acre vineyard.
When I drove up the drive, out there in the country, and say the tasting room / wine facility building, sitting on the top of the ridge, all I saw was beautiful.
As I walked up, I was greeted by Janet, who brought me in and told me all about the winey, the grapes they grew, and took me through a fun flight of wine.
Now, there were some "interesting wines" to taste, with names like "Lady Bug" ad "First Blush". Although not something I would stock the winecellar with, I certainly could see me sitting on a pourch, on a hot sume afternoon, sipping a glass of either one.
What caught my attention was was the 07 Reisling, and the 07 Estate Pinot Noir !
Now being in the Willamette Valley, where in my opinion, some of the best Pino comes from in the US, I wasn't suprised. But, a smaller winery, really early in the game, producing the quality, the layers that this Pinot Noir has, well, all I can say is I have this wine in my wine cellar now ! Just positively Yummy !

Traveling White Tablecloth Visits "Naked Winery and the "Naked Nymphs"

As I sat down to write todays blog, I found myself smiling, happy and really looking forward to the post. Today I write about a "risky business", a winery, it's owners and staff, all pushing the envelope of society.
Naked Winery in Hood River, Oregon is that winery. As soon as you hear the name you form an opinion. Either you are curious or not. The first time I encountered this winery was at one of our great wine event's here in Oregon. It may have been The Seafood and Wine event in Newport, or the one in Astoria. Just don't remember which. What I do remember is that their booth was the busiest at the event ! It took elbows and rudeness to get up to the table for a sip.
I remember having to choose from such wines as "Foreplay" and "Penatration" !
Bottles were dressed up in lace and ribbons. I found myself with a pre conception of what that first taste would bring, a quick spit ? Well, I was wrong, I rather enjoyed what I had been poured. Was it awesome, probably not, but it was good. I don't think the name, the wine names, or the pretty ladies pouring the tasting, were the only reason the crowd never left this winery.
It wasn't until recently this year that I visited "The Columbia Gorge", and wineries of Hood River, Oregon. Parking in front of "Naked", I found myself geting excited ! Finally I was going to experience this winery in their home town. The building is old and historic looking. Right on the main drag, the tasting room is large, long, with high ceilings. A great bar, I believe over 24 ft, greeted by smiling tasting room technicians, obviously happy with their jobs.
That day, I was taken on my "naked pleasure journey" by Shelly. She took me on a tour of 11 wines, 6 more than I normally would venture to taste. But taste I did !
Some where good, some were pretty darn good, and a couple were Yummy !
All in all, a very pleasant experience.
I will leave you with two thoughts.

In my wine cellar, I now have bottles of Naked Winery "04 Penetration Cab", "08 Cascade Cliff Barbera", "08 Dominatrix Pinot Noir", and "09 Naked Pinot Gris".

No matter what you hear, this is a serious winery, partnered with some great wineries and their grapes from Washington State, the Willamette Valley, and Soutern Oregon. They may have an "adult theme", but hay !Their market is the adult population ! I have sipped wine from some "sophisticated looking" wine bottles, and spit instantly. I have sipped wine from a bottle from this winery,wrapped in silk, with a pink bow, and a "sexual encounter name", and I smiled and swallowed, and enjoyed the flovour of a wine named "Foreplay Cardonnay"
Unwrap the package, and try what's inside, you might be glad you did.

Something I continue to find is that I miss the character of the small, family run, "boutique" vineyard wineries. You know for what I speak, the ones where you drive up to someones home, and are greeted by a family member, end escorted into a small, shed type tasting room ? The person pouring your wine has been involved in every step of the way with the grapes you are now enoying. A far cry from the new breed of "tasting rooms" in Californis, Oregon and Washington. Sure, they can be fun, with their large beautiful gift shops, anda "wine bar" the size of a bowling alley. But, what I find is missing is the love you see in the eyes of that family member, pouring and talking about their wines.
A great example of what I am talking about is Palotai Vineyard and Winery in Roseburg, Oregon.
Here you enjoy the atmosphere and "Old World" hospitality. This winery is 100% dry-farmed, useing no pesticides. Grapes are hand picked, with only the best used in their wine production.
On a recent visit, I tasted the entire flight of wines available (with small production and a large following, wines sell out quickly). The Syrah, Atilla and Arany Szarvas were stars on my palate. But, I give a Yummy 4 corks to the Bulls Blood !Red Meat Eaters, this is what you are looking for ! Bulls Blood is a blend of Pinot Noir, Baca Noir, Marchechal Fosch, and Tempranillo. Earthy, very Bold, Full Bodied blend, with plumb, blackberry, licorace, and currant on the nose and palate.
At the back, a slight hint of vanilla and peppar.
If ever you are in Oregon, visiting the excellent wine areas, you might want to make a stop in the Umpqua Valley, as there are some really "Yummy" wines being produced in this AVA. And if you do, I highly suggest a stop at this "Old World" Winery. You won't be dissapointed.

An Evening at a Local Winery...Melrose Vineyard, Roseburg, OR

I am so happy a couple really great friends of ours called and asked if we wanted to go to "Music on the Vines" at Melrose Vineyard, in Roseburg, Oregon, Umpqua Valley
last evening. They hold this for a few weeks in a row on Thursday evenings, and I havn't been in a while.
They used to hold it up in front of the tasting room / "Barn", a work of art !
However, last year, they opened their "event area" down below, which is used for all the parties and weddings, etc. It is really beautiful.
So, off we went at 5 PM. As usual, I was early, and as I know everyone so well, was greeted with big smiles, and great wines. Actually, I picked up my "last months" wine club order. A bottle of their delicious Pinot Gris, bottle of the Pinotage, and my personal "Fav", "Equinox" a delightful red.
The evening provided a great dinner of salad, chicken, garlic bread and of course, watermelon slices ! Along with this, great music, and lot's of friends, all for $12 !
Come on now, it can't get beter than that !?? Oh, let me tell you about the 2 bottles of Pinot Gris, and 2 bottles of Baco Noir !
I balanced the evening with a fine Padermo Cigar, followed by a great night sleep !
Ever in the area, check out Melrose Vineyard in Roseburg, Oregon. You will never be dissapointed.

Travels of the White Tablecloth tasting Marsh Anne Landing in Alaska

I just returned from two weeks in Alaska, A few days in the Denali National Park, a few days in Ankorage, and a week in Seldotna, fishing on the Kenai River for Silver Salmon, and on the ocean for Halibut. I returned with 150 lbs of frozen fish, and I am looking forward to pairing many preparations with various wines of the Pacific North West.
In this video blog, I am on the Kenai River, at the Kenai Riverbend Resort, a premier fishing resort. I will be creating a video blog of this adventure, but for now, here is a video tasting of a terrific southern Oregon wine from Marsh Anne Landing, a great Syrah.

"Tweet-Up Tasting" Desert Wind Winery "Ora" release

So,here I am, all thrilled and happy with the world and more importantly, the world of wine ! My experiences with wineries, vitners, owners and all the great support staff,and other wine bloggers has been nothing but wonderful !
Now here I was, sitting there in my office, on my Quarterhorse Ranch, in Southen Oregon wine country, when I get a message from Amber at Desert Wind Winery in Washington, asking me if I would be interrested in being part of a small group of "Wine Bloggers" to doing a "Twitter-Tasting" between 6-7 PM Pacific Time, on August 10th, for the "Release" of their new white blend "Ora".This is the 1st time they are doing this, and they are soooo excited !

Ok, so here's the deal...That's the day before I leave for 2 weeks in Alaska ! Just a zillion things to prepare before I can leave everything for that long !
What do I say ? You bet I will do it ! What fun ! I had the opportunity to taste some of their wines in Walla Walla at the WBC10 Wine Bloggers Convenion last month, uand they were just Yummy !

So, they ship me a couple of bottles, an info sheet, pairing suggesions.
I immediately put them in my "temperture conrolled" Wine Cellar. Then I start prepairing in my mind, what I wil do special for this "Live...on line wine tasting release" ?

Oh what fun it wil be, I M sure.

Some info about this wine. It's 60% Chardonnay, 20% Riesling, 15% Semilion, 5% Gewurtztraminer. Appellation: the Wahluke Slope< WA. 92% fermentation in stainless steel, 8 % in oak.

I am told, that this wine will pair well with most tapas, sushi, seafood and poultry.
Then to the "My God" section of the menu....will also pair well with,
Mango & Crab Salad, Pinnapple Curry, Tandoori Chicken. Or, for a lighter pairing try it with Asiago or Gruyere cheese and hazlenuts and toasted pistachios.

Had the chance to visit with Marks Ridge Winery in Sweet Home, Oregon this weekend. Gee wizzzz, I was heading to the Oregon Jamboree in Sweet Home anyway, for the 3 day Country Music Fest, so went a day early. This small "boutique" winery was highly recommended to me by the tasting room Manager at Silvan Ridge Winery in Oregon. So, was I ever happy I did check it out. Takes a bit to get there cause it's "out there", and they are the "only game in town". However, their Pinot Noir, and Dry Reislings, are excellent. And, they are coming soon, available for sale on www.awinetodiefor.com. So, check it out ! Video tastings coming soon of both these excellent wines.

The Traveling White Tablecloth Visits Pyreneese Winery

I had the pleasure of visiting one of the newest Wineries in Southern Oregon yesterday. Pyreneese Vineyard, located in Myrtle Creek, Oregon, just south of Roseburg, is located just off the I-5 Highway. The "Cottage Style" Tasting Room is located in a old farm building and is really quaint. Their large deck overlooks the Umpqua River below, and has seating and shade to enjoy a quiet glass of wine.
Dale in the tasting room provided me with all the knowledge of the wines, and the vineyards, with a smile. A really nice young lady.
This is an experience you must have if ever you find yourself on the road between California and Portland, Oregon. It's worth the stop.
My own personal favorites in wine from this "New Guy in Town" ? Why, their Cabernet Sauvignon
and Syrah. The Syrah is an 08", soon to be released. Their last vintage was just sold out. The 08' is lightly peppered, with some heavy fruit, and a long finish. Medium to heavy tannins should smooth over a year or two. I believe it will be getting my "Yummy Award".

White Tablecloth visits Waterbrook Winery in Walla Walla, Washington

On my recent trip to the "Wine Bloggers Convention" in Walla Walla Washington, I had the opportunity to visit the new winery tasting room at Waterbrook. This is a brand new high volume facility with a spectacular tasting room, conference room, and patio with fireplace. An excellent place to entertain.
I was part of a group of Wine Bloggers tere to experience Waterbrooks wines, as well as Spofford Station Winery and Basel Cellars Winery.
WE were ussered into the conference room se above, which was all set up for our tasting experience.
Our first presentation was by Waterbrook Winery

2008 Melange Blanc- A blend of Gewurtztraminer, Riesling, Chardonay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Muscat Canelli
This wine starts with a pleasant melon on the nose, fruit on the palate with mild muscat at the end. A semi-sweet, light and refreshing wine.

2007 Melenge Noir- A blend of Merlot, Cab-Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, and Sangiovese.
This wine is clean and light with mild fruit on nose and palate. This lady had great legs, medium bodied, and lucious.

2007 Reserve Merlot- Mild and light this fruit contains some big tannins, which should calm down with time.

2007 Chardonnay- Clean clear and crisp, with mild oak on the nose, and a hint of cigar box in the finish.

Next we were presented a wine from Spofford Station Winery

2004 Spofford Station Cabernet- This is a dark, clear, clean Cab / syrah with a very big nose. Heavy fruit, big taste, just Yummy ! If you are a Cab lover, you will like this one.

Last but not least is Basel Cellars- I had the pleasure of attending a private pary at Basel Cellars hostd by the Winemaker, Justin Basel on Thursday night. I was very impressed by the vineyard, the tasting room, and estate of this family, and their quality wines.
Justin presented:

2006 Basel Cellars Columbia Valley Syrah
This Syrahhas been aged 18 months in oak, is a blend of two vineyards, also has nice looking legs, is dark, clear, clean, with floral nose, mild legs, deep fruit on the nose and palate. Mild tannins, and a smooth silky finish.
It is just Yummy.

We all had a wonderful experience with these wineries and their wines.
The hospitality we recieved was gracious and honest. They are all very proud of their wines, as they should be.

Wine Bloggers Convention- Walla Walla, WA -Part 1

OK, so, Thursday evening I was invited to a private party at Basel Cellars Estate Winery in Walla Walla. After doing a little research the winery and it's wines, I decided it was worth going, quite exciting actually.
Arriving at the front gate, I was very impressed ! Grand ! with a long drive up to estate thru green pastures. Arriving at estate, you find yourself awed by a very large, multi level log home/resort with a seperate log tasting room. Originally a 4 car garage, it was converted into a beautiful tastin room. The estate is available for functions, for a day, week, or ? Having 5 bedrooms, 3 floors, including an inclosed boardroom, a "party room< downstairs, an impressive wine cellar, and of course, ouside, a inground pool, with a tube waterslide ! There is also a "guest" quarters by the pool.
Our Host for the evening was Justin Basel, Winemaker. Justin explained that her was involved in all aspect's of the winemaking, a very busy young man, who's had work has paid off as shown by the quality of wine I tasted there that nite !
They specialize in Bordeaux Style Blends. Their Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah were excellent.
However, the wine that really blew my palate away, was the 07' Carmenere, not a blend, but 100% Carmenere. With hints of pepper, and a bell perrer finish, this wine had that long smooth finish that just closed my eyes and out me in "Never Never Land !
We recieved a guided tour and "history lesson" of the estate. Had a chance to talk to Justin Basel one on one, and actually are now planning a joint venture with Justin and the Winery. In 2011 we hope to pt together a multi day "High Adventure River Rafting trip on possibly the Rogue River in Southern Oregon. Justin has ffered to be a sponsor. The trip will include evenings of awesome food, and just the best wines.
So, this ist day in Walla Walla was just a great experience. Next issue, will discuss Fridays adventures in wine at the 2010 Wine Bloges Convention.

The Annual Wine Bloggers Convention in Walla Walla Washington, My Experiences, Oh Boy !

Oh Boy ! What a week last week ! I had the great opportunity to attend this years National Wine Bloggers Convention in Walla Walla, Washington last week. I started by attending a special tour of select wineries on Thursday, activities and lectures/classes and wine tastings on Friday. Saturday, morning was an exciting "Mystery Bus Tour" of suprise wineries in the Walla Walla area, followed by event's and tastings. The evening was a "Walk About Tour" of Downtown Walla Walla, visiting the wine bars, and restaurant's, who all stayed open for us. If you have never been to this town, ya just gotta go ! What a really nice small town.
Sunday morning I attended another class before departing.
I think I tasted in that 4 days, about 150 diferent wines.One of the most interresting and fun wine tasting experience, was the "Speed Tasting" experience, done one day with white's then one day with red's.

Well, here I am, just arrived in Walla Walla Washington, for this years annual Wine Bloggers Conference. I'm pretty stoked ! There appears to be lots to see, hear, learn and Drink ! Wow ! Tomorrow it's onto the bus, for a "blindfolded tasting tour" ! That's right, we divide into groups of 30, and head to wineries unknown for a morning with the vitners, owners, tastings, and a tasting / food pairing lunch ! How cool is that ?
Saturday, guest speakers, meet the wineries, wine and dinner, sponsored by St. Michelle Estate Winery.
I'm really looking forward gaining some quality advice and idea's o use with my Social Networking, to better assist my "Partners in Wine", my fellow "winos" and Wineries.
I'll be posting, Vlogging, and Tweeting my experience every day on all my social networks, with pic's as well as video's.

Astoria, Oregon Crab Seafood & ine Festival 2010

This past weekend was Super ! Just sayin. I attended the 2010 Astoria Crab Seafood & Wine Festival in Astoria, Oregon on our beautiful coast. As I have attended many of this type of events, but never this one, I was expecting the usual cowds pushing and shoving around the booths. Well, this one was different than most. Sure, there were a lot of people there, including children, but I rarely felt crowded, except in line for some of the awesome seafood ever !
The really nice thing about this event is that they had most of the food in a separate tent. Yes, there were a couple of seafood vendor booths set up inside, but they were in corners or where they wouldn't affect walking about. And did they ever have great seafood ! Did I say they had great seafood ? I ate more fresh crab & oysters in 3 days, than I have in my entire life ! And..am I happy!
There were a good number of Oregon Wineries represented there, and I had a chance to taste some new ones, as well as talk to the owners. It's amazing ow proud these guys and ladies are of their wins. It's not an industr for just the "Big Guys".
A few of my "Fav's"... Marsh Anne Landing, Henry Estate, Noble Estate, Pyreneese, Hip Chicks, Purple Cow, and a new one for me thatI really found just Yummy, Kings Raven.
So...if you didn't get there this year, you might want to think about attending next year. If you do, I'll see ya there, cause I'm planning to go again.

2010 Umpqua Valley Oregon Barrel Tour

This past Saturday was the Umpqua Valley Barrel Tour here in Southern Oregon. This year, I attended in two capacities, with friends to have fun, and also, as a "wine Guy". They break up the wineries into three areas, North, Central, and South Tour. I was on the North Tour, on one of four bus's.
We started at 9:00 AM, and were at our 1st winery by 10 AM. We visited a total of 6 Wineries, ending up back at thew cars in Sutherlin at 4 PM. We visited Bradley, Brandborg, Rivers Edge, Sienna Ridge, Reustle and MarshAnne Landing.
Each Winery had prepared food pairings to go with the wines they were serving. Some wineries actually did "Barrel Tastings". I'm thinking individual straws would have been better ?
As this is my blog, I get to rate the wines and food pairings, right ? So, that being said, Brandborg Vineyard and Winery in Elkton,wins my award, 4 gold corkscrews, for the food and wine pairings. Their Gewurztraminer with Thai Curry Shrimp, and 09' Pinot Noir samples from the barrel, served with Duck Stew ??? Come on ! Blew me away !
In 2nd Place, MarshAnne Landing in Oakland. They have a beautiful country Tasting Room.
Their Syrah served up with Tri-Tip cooked to perfection !
In 3rd Place, but not ever last in my opinion, was Reustle Prayer Rock in Umpqua.
Their 09' Gruner Veltliner served with Smoked Salmon Crostini, Oh My God !
Reustle was the 1st to bring this wonderful white wine grape to the U.S., and currently, there is only one other small production winery producing it in Oregon.
So, Cheers to the Umpqua Valley Wine Growers Association for what they bring to us all.

A Wine To Die For e-Commerce site goes Live

Well, we're finally live. The wine marketing website is up, tested and running, with orders coming in on Select Wines & from Select Wineries here in Oregon. My 1st 5 wineries are on it, with another 6 in the setup que and will be added shortly.
My quest of visiting every winery in Oregon, and forming a partnership with select wineries has been a good mix of fun and work. From the start, I wanted this to be about the smaller, family run wineries, you know, like it used to be in Northern California, before the all became "Big", with massive tasting rooms, and no real "personal touch". You know what I mean. The wineries I have chosen aren't like that, and probably never will be. I know when I walk in the door if they are what I'm looking for. Friendly staff, personable, knowledgable, and "family run". Now, in most cases, yes, your talking to a family member, or someone that has worked with the vineyard long enough to be thought of as family. They just love to tell you the history of the grapes, the wine and the family.
Next and most important, I taste their wines. To be honest, I ask them if they were serving their wines to a very important person, at a dinner party at their home, which of the wines would they serve to impress ? Those are the wines I direct my attention to. In most cases, these aren't the wines offered to the public for a "free taste", or for $5. If I find wines at that winery to be really tasty and Yummy, I select them for my site. Now, I'm not talking only expensive wines, but a good range pricewise. But, trust me, there are no bottles of "No Luck Chuck Noir" on my site.
The bottom line is that we don't need to look at 1000's of wines, and blindly choose something to order for our winecellar, or table. Instead, I'm giving a more select choice of great wines, from Oregon wineries, pre-tasted, with interresting and unusual video tastings on each selection, from every vineyard. I'm also offering a video tasting experience of every winery on the site, so, if your sitting in New York, and interrested in some great Oregon Pinot Noir, you can visit a winery here, and get some experience with the wine before you buy some. Besides that, I'm doing a video tasting in an "exotic setting" for every wine on the site.
